Anna Calvi is probably not at all like Patti Smith (but who cares?)

Anna Calvi must be the ultimate pop/rock fan’s desire at this instant moment. Brian Eno himself has allegedly described her something like the most original thing since Patti Smith. Who cares if it is actually a rather irrelevant remark to make?

Ok, ok, let’s be fair. Have you seen her perform? She IS kind of gorgeous, right?

And she just put her debut album out. It is called Anna Calvi and it is set in a bottom of a well that reverberates her crystal clear voice and stark guitar notes deep into your cerebellum. Oh yes, it IS kind of gorgeous, too.

Gorgeous… gorgeous, oh gorgeous, what a magnificently proper term that is sometimes.

How to kill an hour only to feel smart: the Zebra Puzzle

There are five houses in a row.

The Englishman lives in the red house.

The Spaniard owns the dog.

Coffee is drunk in the green house.

The Ukrainian drinks tea.

The green house is immediately to the right of the ivory house.

The Old Gold smoker owns snails.

Kools are smoked in the yellow house.

Milk is drunk in the middle house.

The Norwegian lives in the first house.

The man who smokes Chesterfields lives in the house next to the man with the fox.

Kools are smoked in a house next to the house where the horse is kept.

The Lucky Strike smoker drinks orange juice.

The Japanese smokes Parliaments.

The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.

Now, who drinks water? Who owns the zebra?

In the interest of clarity, it must be added that each of the five houses is painted a different color, and their inhabitants are of different national extractions, own different pets, drink different beverages and smoke different brands of American cigarets.                 One other thing: first means from the left, right means your right.

For trivia, alternative versions AND the solution go there. Oh and don’t waste more time to prove anything than your curiosity lets you. Life is kind of short.

Ghost in the drum machine

No, not really the Arthur Koestler book. Check Gilbert Ryle, instead. Not satisfied? Ok, use your ears, then. Music made of reverb soul in a landscape of bleeps.

Is Danny Mendlow God?

Ahem, let’s hope not. But is he entertaining? Hell, yes! His minute take on religion ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtGSS6W-C6o ) is, well, divine. So much it got banned from youtube once, hence my update.

Dig that? For more fun stuff check him here http://dannymendlow.wordpress.com

Duck Sauce, anyone?

Armand van Helden and A-Trak hit it bigtime with the first really good dance track to emerge since, erm, an awful lot of years, actually.

Remember the ultimate weapon to defeat Sadam in South Park? Well, time to reclaim some kudos back. Rejoice!

Nottingham quartet make album of the year

Well, in AmYzTEkNoziA time is not to be measured by years, as we all know by now. So, it is rather irrelevant, in the outer limits of absurdity, to receive as tokens concepts like the best records of the year and such. Around here, we merely use that as an inside joke. We don’t do such stuff, you do it for us if your time is different.

Nevertheless, in another dimension this record could be an easy candidate. Fellow extraterrestrials, a genuine applause for The Soundcarriers, as their Celeste is as eerie and euphoric as psychedelic pop could get in any given year!

The Curse, song by Josh Ritter, video by Liam Hurley

is another candidate for music video of the year. First have a look, then have your say. Oh and don’t forget those handkerchiefs, this stuff is meant to be quite moving, you know.

Raindrops fall on Earth, out of a piano.

A blonde girl in a polka dot dress is playing it. She is registered as Maike Matern somewhere in Germany, EU, Earth.

She calls herself Zazie von Einem Anderen Stern, instead. That is Zazie from Another Star, in German. And if Melancholy were a language, she would simply be called Grace.

A record of hers appeared recently. It is called Regen:Tropfen. Yes, in German it means Raindrops.
